OSUN: Women Affairs Commissioner, Olaboopo, assures women of State's protection of their rights.

The Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Affairs in the State of Osun, Olubukola Olaboopo has assured women and vulnerable female children of their protection by the government of the State.

Olaboopo gave this assurance while addressing journalists during an awareness walk in commemoration of the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women organized by her ministry yesterday.

According to her, the campaign was organized in collaboration with the Community Development Service, CDS, of the National Youth Service Advocacy Group with the aim of enlightening and sensitizing girl children and women in the State and beyond.

"The procession is a message to women in the State that they have the protection of the government under the leadership of Governor Gboyega Oyetola", the Commissioner said.

She added that the campaign was also a warning signal to men with violent tendencies who were in the habit of abusing children and women that it's not acceptable in the State.

Furthermore, the Commissioner appreciated efforts of the Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, especially his passion and love for womanhood and their protection in the State.

Also speaking, the Deputy Governor of the State, Benedict Alabi, who represented the Governor at the awareness walk conducted within Osogbo, the state capital, said violence against womanhood was criminal and punishable by imprisonment or by hanging, depending on the severity of injury done on the victim.

He stated that women are critical and important in any society, saying the social behaviour of any particular society was always a reflection of the charity of the  womanhood of such society.

He said: "I want us to please take the message home, to people we know, that it's not just a procession, it's a restatement of the position of law and the wish of our people.

"We all know that our women are so precious to us.

"There's nothing you give to women that you will not get back in folds; give them a seed, you have a garden, if you show them love, the world will become peaceful to live, and if you make them a subject of hatred, the whole community will become the community of haters.

"This we do not want; we want peace and we are preaching peace. We want us to please, embrace peace as part of our culture".

The Deputy Governor added that violence against women was not prevalent in the State, however, there's a need to constantly remind people as to why it should be avoided.
