The program was meant to sensitize Local Government Chairmen, Heads of departments of social development units across all Local Government Areas, Gender Desk Officers of all Local Government and wives of Local Government Chairmen on the need to economically empower indigent women in the grassroots. The Commissioner reiterated that the essence of having local government areas is to ensure that government impact reaches the grassroots.
She mentioned that the role of local government administrators can not be overemphasized. While mentioning that it is mandatory for all local government to have women development centres where women can be trained in chosen vocations, she charged local government chairmen to look into creating these centres and resuscitating existing but moribund ones. She explained that the essence is to complement the efforts of the State Government in ensuring financial stability and independence for women in the State.
In his response Hon. Johnson Ojo, the chairman of Ede South Local Government Area who represented the Chairman of All Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) said the chairmen were happy about the development, he promised that all local government chairmen would heed the call.
Chief Mrs. Abiodun Idowu, the chairman of the Forum of Wives of Local Government Chairmen {FOWIC} applauded the ministry of Women Affairs for the laudable initiative, she expressed the willingness of the wives of local government chairmen to take up the responsibility.
Also at the events were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Pharm. Omolara Ajayi, Director, Women Affairs Department in the Ministry, Mrs. Ruth Omoloye, Director Child Development, Mr. Jide Falade amongst others.
The Honourable Commissioner later held a closed door meeting with the wives of Local Government Chairmen.
