The proclamation of June 12 as Democracy Day continues to renew the hope for a better and prosperous Nigeria.
Since 1999, the most populous black nation has witnessed a tremendous turn of events in our democratic journey.
With highs and lows, there is no understatement that Democracy remains the best model of governance which ensures that government is an institution of the people, entrenched by the people and works for the people.
The 2nd anniversary of the recognition of this day as Democracy Day once again conscientizes the role of freedom and the fight against oppression, dictatorship as well as bad governance.
OsunMediaHub today celebrates the heroes, heroines, martyrs, activists, leaders of thought and others who rallied round the truth and fought the oppression.
Special Tributes to the Late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (M.K.O) whose acclaimed victory in the June 12, 1993 presidential election gave birth to the struggle for what Nigeria has enjoyed uninterrupted in the last 21 years.
The detribalized Nigerian who won across the nation irrespective of political, ethnicity and religious inclination is the hero of our Democracy.
Special recognition is also due for martyrs of the June 12 struggle whose protests, calls and actions to compel the then military rulers, General Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha to ensure the entrenchment of civil rule in the country.
We also celebrate those who were killed, sent to prison, maimed, and molested due to the struggle for the restoration of democratic rule in Nigeria.
Worthy of mention are Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Late Mrs Kudirat Abiola, Late Chief Anthony Enahoro, Late Alfred Rewane, Chief Anthony Nwankwo, Femi Falana (SAN) among others who stood by the clamour for the restoration of Abiola’s mandate till he breathed last in prison on July 9, 1998.
As we celebrate, we salute all Nigerians for their doggedness so far and their commitment towards building a virile and prosperous nation.
We urge them to remain steadfast and committed to the progressive ideals of the Next Level team and the vision for a greater Nigeria.
Happy Democracy Day Nigeria,
From all of us at OsunMediaHub.
