As Commissioner inspects sets of newly purchased nursery implements
The Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Hon. Sola Oladepo has lauded Governor Gboyega Oyetola over the governor's commitment to effectively address the deforestation of various Forest Reserves in the State.
Oladepo commended Governor Oyetola today when he was inspecting the newly acquired sets of implements for the 250,000 nurseries raised for Osun forest reserves. He added that the Governor has released over sixteen million naira for raising of tree seedlings and procurement of necessary equipments to aid the proposed aggressive planting of trees in the already depleted Forest Reserves and in strategic places across the state.
The Commissioner was joined by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Oladele Temitope mni and other top officers in the Ministry of Environment, while the Director of Forestry, Mr. Akanji Olayiwola conducted the Hon. Commissioner's team on inspection of the equipments.
Recall that the Nigeria Conservative Foundation hinted that since independence in 1960, Nigeria has lost 96% of its natural forest cover and that the deforestation rate is at an alarming 11.1% per annum. The Government of Oyetola is leaving no stone unturned to increase the state Forest cover by 25% as advocated by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
The Commissioner who stressed that Osun would also leverage on the Federal Government plan to planting 25 million trees also warn that Government will employ all lawful process to secure its Reserves from illegal tree fellers and encroachers. Oladepo said.
