A new crisis gripped the Rivers State House of Assembly on Monday as lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalai Fubara.
The Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Edison Ehie, has been removed from the position of Majority Leader of the House of Assembly.
This was issued after an emergency meeting in the House of Commons auditorium on Monday morning after the House chamber was burnt down last night.
The Speaker of the House of Assembly Martins Amaefure, has expressed sadness over the alleged arson, insisting that the incident was monitored by the Government House and the Ehie of Ahoada East. Three items were brought before the House on Monday: the removal of Ehie as House Leader; the impeachment of Fubara; and the suspension of Ehie, and three other lawmakers — Victor Okoh from Bonny, Goodboy Sokari also from Ahoada West as well as Adolphus Timothy from Opobo Nkoro. Sylvanus Nwankwo from Omuma presented the notice of impeachment as signed by 24 members.
The governor is accused of acts of gross misconduct unbecoming of his office. The Speaker asked that the notice of impeachment be forwarded to the governor and allow the legal process to take its course.
The plenary was adjourned “sine die”. Afterward, Fubara later stormed the Assembly Complex amid the development. Later, members of the House of Assembly evacuated the hall for safety as tear gas was fired outside the hall.
Protests soon erupted outside the complex, with supporters of the governor opposing the planned impeachment. It is unclear whether the fire is linked to a political imbroglio, but there are rumors of a rift between Mr Fubara and his predecessor, Mr Nyesom Wike, who is currently the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). had been playing for a while.
