Another boat accident claims many lives in Sokoto


Tragedy struck in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State as several individuals are believed to have lost their lives in a devastating boat accident.

The incident unfolded on Thursday evening when a boat carrying a significant number of passengers capsized while navigating the river’s waters.

Witnesses from the community expressed their alarm, noting that this accident marks the third such incident to occur within the span of just one month, raising concerns about the safety of water transport in the area.


Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as the boat, overwhelmed by turbulent waters, overturned midway through its journey, sending all passengers and the boat’s operator plunging into the river.

Aminu Bodinga, the special adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu for the State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the tragic event and highlighted the urgent response efforts in motion. Teams from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), along with officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority, have swiftly arrived at the accident site to carry out rescue operations.

As the rescue efforts continue, officials have not yet disclosed the exact number of passengers who were aboard the ill-fated boat when the tragedy occurred, leaving families and the community anxiously awaiting further information.
