British Airways was forced to offload 58 passengers from its Abuja to London flight on Friday morning due to a technical fault involving one of the aircraft’s doors. The issue rendered nearby seats unusable, reducing the number of passengers the aircraft could safely carry.
As a result, 30 affected passengers accepted hotel accommodation provided by the airline, while 28 chose to return home. British Airways confirmed that arrangements had been made to rebook the affected travellers on a flight the following morning.
Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He advised that the affected passengers are eligible to seek compensation and encouraged them to approach NCAA Consumer Protection Officers at the terminal for support.
In a follow-up clarification, Achimugu stated that the root cause of the seating issue was a faulty door, which required surrounding seats to remain unoccupied for safety reasons.
