An armed gang launched a deadly assault on Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, resulting in the deaths of five people, including a police officer identified as Adejumo Wasiu.
The attack, which occurred on August 8, 2025, involved dozens of gunmen on motorcycles who stormed the town, targeting the Divisional Police Headquarters and raiding the local market. The attackers opened fire indiscriminately, causing panic and forcing many residents to flee their homes to nearby communities for safety.
In response, a combined security task force comprising operatives from the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), vigilante groups, and local hunters swiftly mobilised to repel the attackers and restore order. A full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators has since been launched.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, Kwara State Police Command spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, described the attackers as “armed criminals numbering in their hundreds.” She added that the swift response by security forces helped prevent further casualties and damage.
The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, Adekimi Ojo, alongside the Director of DSS in the state, visited Babanla for an on-the-spot assessment. During the visit, they met with the traditional ruler, Oba Yusuf Aliyu Alabi Arojojoye II, and held high-level security talks aimed at strengthening inter-agency collaboration and community policing efforts.
The joint security team also inspected key areas affected by the attack, including the police station and market, to ensure normalcy had returned.
Commissioner Ojo ordered sustained armed patrols, continuous intelligence gathering, and the deployment of specialised tracking teams. The DSS also pledged ongoing intelligence support to aid the investigation and apprehension of those responsible.
The police command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state and urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, encouraging them to report any suspicious activity to security agencies.
