The policemen who were involved in the extortion of a student in Ogun State have been taken into custody at the state police command following a report by PUNCH Metro.
As reported by The Punch, the student, Olawale Ayomide, accused officers from the Igbeba Police Station in the Ijebu Ode area of taking N99,000 from him.
Olawale shared his experience with our reporter last Thursday. He said the incident took place on Tuesday, October 7. He noted that one of the officers left his official cap in Olawale's vehicle after allegedly carrying out the extortion.
Olawale explained that the policemen stopped him while he was driving his mother’s car from Sagamu to Ijebu-Ode. They accused him of driving a vehicle without a number plate. He tried to clarify that the car belonged to his mother, who was in the process of completing the registration documents, but the officers did not listen. Instead, they insisted he follow them to their station and then extorted money from him.
A police source, who wished to remain anonymous as he was not authorized to speak about the case, informed The Punch reporter on Tuesday that the officers were called to the state command because of the news report.
Olawale's mother, Mrs. Omolabake, confirmed that the car belongs to her when she was contacted last Thursday.
She also shared that she was unhappy about the situation and mentioned that she personally found the cap inside the vehicle.
She said, “I saw the cap in the vehicle and asked my son where he saw it.
