The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Switzerland Chapter, Dr Adebayo John Alfonso has strongly condemned the recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, describing the move—and the accompanying threat of U.S. military deployment—as “an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and national dignity.”
The designation reportedly follows alleged concerns over the killing of Nigerians by Islamic terrorists in Northern Nigeria. In a controversial statement, President Trump warned that failure by the Nigerian government to act decisively could prompt the U.S. Department of War to deploy troops to Africa’s most populous nation.
Reacting to the development, the Switzerland APC Chairman, Dr Adebayo Alfonso described the threat as “unacceptable, neo-imperialistic, and an insult to the collective sovereignty of the Nigerian people.”
“Nigeria is no longer a slave colony or an occupied territory,” the Chairman declared. “Our nation fought hard for its independence, and no foreign power—no matter how influential—has the moral or legal right to threaten invasion under the guise of humanitarian concern.”
He further emphasized that while Nigeria values its diplomatic relations with the United States and recognizes the shared commitment to global peace and security, any form of military action must be mutually agreed upon and conducted in partnership with the Nigerian government.
“If it is a joint operation aimed at strengthening counterterrorism efforts, that is acceptable,” he stated. “However, any unilateral invasion would be a gross violation of international law and an erosion of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.”
The Chairman reiterated that Nigeria remains a strategic ally in the global fight against terrorism and continues to engage with international partners through diplomatic and military cooperation.
“Unilateral intervention only occurs when there is irrefutable evidence that a government is complicit in the crisis,” he added. “That is certainly not the case with Nigeria. Our government has made tremendous sacrifices in combating insecurity, and those efforts deserve support, not condemnation.”
The APC leader urged the U.S. government to pursue diplomatic channels, strengthen intelligence sharing, and support Nigeria through capacity building, rather than threats of aggression.
“True allies do not issue ultimatums; they collaborate,” he concluded. “Nigeria’s sovereignty is not negotiable."

The recent decision by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to introduce a 15% import policy on petrol from the United States is a strategic move to stimulate Nigeria’s economy. The policy is expected to enhance fuel accessibility across the nation while supporting ongoing developments such as the Dangote Refinery project.
This initiative will not only ensure a more stable supply of petrol for Nigerians but also reinforce economic and trade relations between Nigeria and the United States, fostering mutual growth and cooperation. Alfonso said.
