According to a report by Punch on Monday, November 24, 2025, a 36-year-old Nigerian graduate named Hammed has died in the United Kingdom from advanced cancer, just after completing his Master’s degree.
According to reports, Hammed fell seriously ill while in the UK and was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Despite undergoing treatment, his condition worsened and he passed away shortly after graduation.
His death has sparked fresh anxiety among Nigerians living in the UK. Many in the Nigerian community believe this tragic case highlights growing risks faced by young Nigerians who move abroad in search of better opportunities.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of Nigerian students and graduates dying suddenly or after illness in the UK. Earlier this year, Ross Ogbeinde, another Nigerian studying in South Wales, collapsed and died suddenly. His family later launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his burial.
There are also concerns about the costs associated with repatriation and burial. Community members say many families struggle to pay for returning their loved one’s body to Nigeria, and they appeal to well-wishers for financial help.
In addition, advocates warn that the emotional and financial stress on these students — often far from home, without strong support systems — can be overwhelming.
