A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has accused Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, of deliberately frustrating the party’s chances of fielding a candidate in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Friday, December 5, 2025, Sani alleged that Governor Adeleke was attempting a political maneuver that would allow him to defect to another party, run for re-election, and then return to the PDP after winning.
According to Sani, Adeleke’s refusal to formally tender his resignation to the PDP leadership and his alleged interference in Osun’s primary process are part of a calculated strategy intended to prevent the party from participating in the election with a legitimate candidate.
“He does not want PDP to present another candidate. He wants to go to another party, win, and then come back to PDP,” Sani stated.
Sani, who served as chairman of the PDP’s three-man ad hoc delegates committee for Osun State, insisted that the party successfully conducted its primary and submitted the result to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He argued that Adeleke’s grievance is not about the process, but about his fear that a PDP candidate could threaten his political interest if he decamps.
He explained “Nobody is telling him not to go. It is his constitutional right. But he should not be a stumbling block to our party fielding a candidate. Let him go if he wishes, but PDP must not be denied the right to present its own candidate.”
When asked whether the candidate produced through the PDP primaries is only a placeholder pending ongoing legal disputes in the party, Sani maintained that the party currently has a legitimate candidate.
“We have a candidate. A placeholder can be a candidate and a candidate can be a placeholder. What matters is that PDP must not be stopped from participating.”
