The Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation into the deaths of six members of a family whose lifeless bodies were discovered inside a locked room in Ogale, Eleme Local Government Area, on Sunday.
Police said the incident was reported by Godwin Ogosu, the brother of one of the victims, who raised the alarm after his elder brother, the man’s wife and their children failed to wake up, with all the doors still locked from the inside.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed that officers from the Eleme Division swiftly responded to the distress call. The officers reportedly forced the door open and discovered six bodies lying motionless inside the room.
The deceased were identified as Theophilus Obele, 49; his wife, Eunice Obele, 35; and their children — Abel Nwaka, 25; Saka Obele, 18; Peace Obele, 14; and Nyimenka Obele, 7.
Preliminary findings suggest that fumes from a generator allegedly left running inside the house may have led to the tragic deaths. However, police said a full investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause.
The bodies have been evacuated to the mortuary for autopsy, while the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The Rivers State Police Command expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
