A father told his daughter, "I didn't know this was what your uncle was enjoying - Shokoya laments

Joy Shokoya, of the Nirabel Center Nigeria, and a female activist, who has been campaigning against sexual harassment and gender based violence in Nigeria, during a recent appearance on News Central TV, has recounted the story of a survivor who endured prolonged abuse from her father and uncle, severe emotional distress, and repeated trauma before seeking support.

While she was talking, she said, "I remember a survivor that came, and when she came —everything was just going wrong. She had suicidal tendencies, had terrible anger management and all of that. She came to the center having been abused by her uncle who carried out five abortions for her.

"And then when her uncle left the scene, she returned to her father who continued from where her uncle stopped, telling her; 'I didn't know that this was what your uncle was enjoying.'

"She came to the center broken, very disturbed...she wasn't herself. With the support we were able to provide, the next time we had of her, she wanted to go back to school. And we were very glad to provide support."
