According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, March 5, 2026, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially reacted to viral reports claiming the Super Eagles have been disqualified from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
On Wednesday, the federation dismissed these claims as false, clarifying that FIFA has not yet delivered a final verdict on Nigeria's eligibility protest against DR Congo.
NFF Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, explained that the reports circulating online were based on an outdated FIFA publication from November 2025.
This old statement, which listed DR Congo as a qualifier for the inter-confederation play-offs, was released before Nigeria even filed its formal complaint.
The dispute began after DR Congo defeated Nigeria on penalties during the CAF play-off final. In December, the NFF petitioned FIFA, alleging that the Congolese side fielded ineligible players.
The protest highlights that several DR Congo stars hold European passports, which contradicts Congolese law prohibiting dual citizenship. Nigerian officials argue that FIFA was "deceived" into clearing these players.
The delay in FIFA’s ruling has caused tension, as the inter-confederation play-offs are scheduled for late March in Mexico. While media outlets claimed Nigeria's dreams were over, the NFF insists the case remains open.
"We have not received any formal communication from FIFA," Olajire stated. "No information can be shared with journalists without first reaching the federations involved."
For now, the Super Eagles remain in a state of "active anticipation." If FIFA rules in Nigeria's favor, the team could be reinstated, keeping the hope of a 2026 World Cup appearance alive for millions of fans.
