The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Osun State Office, on Tuesday convened an expanded stakeholders’ meeting in preparation for the formal commencement of electioneering campaigns for the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election.
The meeting, held in Osogbo, brought together representatives of political parties, security agencies, civil society organisations, members of the media, and other key stakeholders. It was aimed at reinforcing a collective commitment to ensuring a credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral process ahead of the poll scheduled for August 15, 2026.
In his opening remarks, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Osun State, Mutiu Olaleke Agboke, stressed that all stakeholders must see themselves as partners united by a shared responsibility to deliver a successful election.
According to him, the success of the electoral process does not rest solely on INEC but also depends on the conduct of political parties, candidates, supporters, security agencies, and the electorate.
Agboke emphasised that each stakeholder has critical responsibilities to uphold in fostering a democratic process that genuinely reflects the will of the people of Osun State. He urged political actors to ensure that campaigns are issue-based and conducted strictly within the ambit of the law.
The REC highlighted that political rallies and campaigns are designed primarily to educate voters on candidates’ policies, aspirations, and governance plans. He cautioned against the use of campaign platforms for inflammatory rhetoric, misinformation, or actions that could threaten public peace.
He reiterated that electioneering campaigns are constitutionally and legally recognised components of democratic practice, serving as avenues for presenting policy alternatives and manifestos, educating voters on party ideology, mobilising lawful support, and deepening democratic participation.
The Commission assured stakeholders of its readiness to conduct the election in strict compliance with the Electoral Act and relevant guidelines.
The 2026 Osun State Governorship Election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
