A teacher at Model Secondary School, Alagbaka has come under heavy criticism after allegedly flogging a 14-year-old Senior Secondary School II (SS2) student with 18 strokes of the cane for failing to comply with the school’s hairstyle regulation.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, has sparked widespread outrage among parents and residents in Ondo State, with growing calls for authorities to investigate the matter and take appropriate disciplinary action against those involved.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the punishment as excessive and inconsistent with the school’s usual disciplinary standards.
Tensions escalated on Tuesday morning when the student’s father reportedly stormed the school premises in protest. The aggrieved parent was said to have blocked the school gate while demanding an explanation from the management, causing a temporary disruption before he was eventually pacified by the principal and other staff members.
During the confrontation, the father stated that while he supports discipline in schools, he strongly opposed what he described as disproportionate punishment inflicted on his son.
The situation reportedly became more heated when a teacher allegedly attempted to obstruct media coverage by seizing a journalist’s phone—an action that has also drawn criticism from observers and raised concerns about press interference.
As public reactions continue to mount, many are urging the state government to step in to ensure accountability and prevent a recurrence.
