The General Overseer of the Altar of Solution & Healing Assembly based in Oyigbo-Rivers State, Prophet Chidiebere Okoroafor, to death by hanging for multiple murders including the killing of his choir mistress, Orlunma Nwagba, who he allegedly impregnated.
In June 2023, Justice S.O. Benson of the Rivers State High Court sentenced Okoroafor to death by hanging or lethal injection.
Immediately following the judgment, his defense team, led by Innocent Ekwu, filed a notice of appeal. They argue that the trial court "misapprehended the facts" because there were no eyewitnesses.
The murders and the conviction rested primarily on confessional statements, which they intend to challenge.
As of early 2026, Okoroafor remains in custody at the Port Harcourt Maximum Security Custodial Centre. In Nigeria, death row inmates often spend years or even decades in prison while their appeals move through the Court of Appeal and eventually the Supreme Court.
The conviction was based on the events of December 11, 2017, in the Oyigbo Local Government Area.
Okoroafor was found guilty of killing his choir mistress, Orlunma Nwagba (who was pregnant at the time), her friend Chigozie Ezenwa, and Chigozie's 11-month-old daughter, Cresabel.
The court heard that the victims visited the Prophet to discuss the choir mistress's pregnancy. He allegedly tricked them into a bush in two separate locations, where he strangled the women and killed the infant.
He was arrested after Chigozie's husband raised an alarm. During his initial arraignment in 2018, Okoroafor reportedly knelt in court and confessed to the killings, begging for forgiveness a statement that proved critical to his 2023 conviction.
The case of Prophet Chidiebere Okoroafor, the General Overseer of the Altar of Solution and Healing Assembly in Oyigbo, is currently in the appeals phase as of March 2026.
