Police in Uganda have confirmed the death of Matovu Moses, a musician with the Afrigo Band, following an alleged attack in Kampala.
The Uganda Police Force said the incident occurred on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Kibuli in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
In a statement posted on its official X account through Kawala Racheal, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the police said Moses was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants at Kibuli Market Zone B.
“Police at Kabalagala have registered a case of suspected murder involving Matovu Moses, a musician with Afrigo Band,” the statement said.
“Moses was allegedly attacked this morning 24.09.2026 by unknown assailants at Kibuli Market Zone B, in Makindye Division, Kampala District.
“He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for medical attention, where he later succumbed to his injuries.”
The police initially said a task team had been deployed to the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify and arrest the suspected attackers.
However, in a subsequent update, police said preliminary investigations had provided more details about the circumstances leading to Moses’ death.
According to the police, Moses went to the residence of his girlfriend at about 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that at approximately 5:30 a.m., the deceased went to the residence of his girlfriend,” police said.
“It is alleged that as he and the lady were leaving the residence, they were confronted by a male suspect who is also alleged to have previously been in a relationship with the same lady.”
Police said the woman who was with Moses at the time of the incident had been arrested and was assisting detectives with the investigation.
“Following the arrest of the female who was in the company of the deceased, preliminary information indicates that the incident may have arisen from a physical altercation,” the police said.
“However, the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation and subsequent death are yet to be fully established.”
Moses sustained serious injuries and was taken to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda (motorbike) rider, where he later died.
Police said the female suspect remained in custody while the male suspect had been identified but reportedly fled the scene.
“The male suspect has been positively identified and is believed to have fled the scene,” the statement said.
“Police are actively pursuing him to facilitate his arrest and assist in establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident.”
The force said investigators were still working to verify the different accounts of the incident and would provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
It also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their work.
“We assure the public that all necessary steps are being taken to apprehend the suspect and establish the facts of the matter,” police said.
The Uganda Police Force extended its condolences to Moses’ family, friends, colleagues and fans.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and fans of Matovu Moses during this difficult time,” it said.
