Amotekun Arrests Over 30 Environmental Sanitation Offenders in Osun, Warns Against Indiscriminate Dumping

The Osun State Amotekun Corps has arrested more than 30 persons for allegedly violating the state’s environmental sanitation regulations by dumping refuse on roads and inside drainage channels across Osogbo and its environs.

The arrests were made in the midnight on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, when operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps, in collaboration with environmental sanitation authorities, commenced enforcement against individuals engaging in indiscriminate disposal of refuse.

The operation forms part of efforts by the state government to tackle the persistent challenge of indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse on roads, streets and drainage channels, which can obstruct the free flow of rainwater and contribute to flooding and other environmental hazards.

The enforcement followed the recent constitution of an Environmental Sanitation Task Force by the Osun State Government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke.

The state government had warned residents against dumping refuse indiscriminately, particularly on roads and in drainage channels, and directed residents to comply with established waste disposal arrangements.

The Osun Amotekun Corps was subsequently mandated to work with environmental sanitation officials in identifying and apprehending persons who violate the state's environmental regulations.

Following their arrest, the offenders were handed over to environmental sanitation officers for further investigation and appropriate action in line with the relevant environmental laws and regulations of the state.

Speaking with journalists in Osogbo, the Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, High Chief Dr. Hon. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, said the enforcement was necessary to curb the persistent practice of dumping refuse on roads and in drainage channels.

According to him, indiscriminate waste disposal becomes particularly dangerous during the rainy season, as refuse dumped in drainage channels can obstruct water flow, damage roads and create unhealthy conditions for residents.

He explained that the operation was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding residents but to ensure compliance with the state government's environmental sanitation directives and protect communities from the consequences of improper waste disposal.

The Corps Commander urged residents across Osun State to cooperate with the government and desist from dumping refuse on roads, streets and drainage channels.

He further encouraged members of the public to make use of the waste collection arrangements provided by the state government, noting that refuse trucks have been assigned to collect household waste from residents.

Omoyele appealed to residents to properly package their waste and hand it over to designated waste collectors rather than disposing of it in unauthorised locations.

He also warned that the Amotekun Corps would continue to support environmental sanitation officials in enforcing the government's directives and ensuring that individuals who violate the regulations are brought to the attention of the appropriate authorities.

He stressed that maintaining a clean and healthy environment is a collective responsibility that requires the cooperation of government agencies, residents, business owners and other stakeholders.

The Osun Amotekun Corps therefore called on residents to support the ongoing environmental sanitation efforts by keeping their surroundings clean and using approved waste disposal channels.

The Corps reiterated its commitment to working with relevant government agencies to promote environmental cleanliness, prevent the blockage of drainage systems and protect roads and other public infrastructure across the state.
