Motorists in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have welcomed the reduction in petrol prices at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) outlets, expressing hope that the development would lead to lower transport fares.
The development followed the Federal Government’s announcement of a 30-day fuel discount at NNPC retail outlets nationwide as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising transportation costs.
There were slight queues at some NNPC outlets in Abeokuta as motorists visited the stations to purchase fuel at the reduced prices.
A commercial tricycle operator in the Ita Eko area of Abeokuta, Afeez Solaja, described the reduction as a welcome development, saying it could help lower transportation costs and the prices of food and other household essentials.
He said, “Yes, it’s good news for us. We can see that the fuel price at NNPC stations is reducing gradually, but we believe that the government can reduce it further to the barest minimum.”
Another tricycle operator, Abiodun Ojerinde, also welcomed the price reduction, saying commuters had been struggling with the high cost of transportation.
He urged the government to find a lasting solution to the rising cost of fuel and its impact on residents.
Speaking with The Nation at the NNPC Mega Station opposite Obasanjo Hilltop, a manager who requested anonymity said the price of petrol had dropped from ₦1,380 to ₦1,355 per litre.
He said, “Even with the reduced price of ₦1,355, there is still a ₦66 discount for customers who use our app to make their payment.
“We are optimistic that the price will still drop further. Most motorists are aware of the Federal Government’s directive, and we have started sensitising those who are not aware of the price reduction at our outlets across the town.”
