Good day to the Progressives family, especially in Osun State. I am Salam Mustapha, and I would like to emphasize that this piece reflects my personal views and is not associated with any individual or organization.
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has faced internal crises that significantly impacted its electoral performance, particularly in the 2018 and 2022 elections.
Leading up to the 2018 governorship election, the APC was deeply divided over its primary election process. The selection of Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola as the party’s candidate caused dissatisfaction among some members who felt sidelined. This discontent led to internal grievances, with some party members working against APC’s success. Although the party managed to win the election, the cracks within remained and deepened over time.
By 2022, the division within the party had escalated into a full-blown crisis, splitting members into two dominant factions—one loyal to former Governor Rauf Aregbesola and the other supporting Governor Gboyega Oyetola. Disputes over party leadership, governance style, and unresolved grievances from the past led to internal sabotage. This division weakened APC’s electoral strength, ultimately contributing to its defeat by the PDP in the gubernatorial election.
As the 2026 governorship election approaches, the APC in Osun must learn from past mistakes. Internal wrangling, factionalism, and disloyalty must be avoided at all costs. Leaders and members must prioritize unity, fairness, and reconciliation to ensure the party stands strong against opposition forces. A divided house cannot win a battle, and if history repeats itself, the consequences could be even worse than before.
I appeal to all leaders, elders, stakeholders, and party loyalists to remain committed to the party’s decisions and work collectively for its success. We must see ourselves as one big family—united by a common goal that nothing should separate. A victory for one should be seen as a victory for all.
Let every APC stakeholder in Osun put the party’s interest above personal ambitions so that victory in 2026 will be assured.
