The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged cash withdrawals totaling ₦189 billion.
A source within the commission, who requested anonymity, confirmed the development to Channels Television on Monday. The source noted that the transactions under scrutiny may have violated provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. However, it remains unclear when the alleged withdrawals occurred.
Tambuwal reportedly arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 11:30 a.m., where he was questioned by investigators regarding the financial activities in question.
When contacted, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to comment on the matter.
Tambuwal served as Governor of Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023. Prior to that, he held the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015.
