A hearing-impaired woman, Hauwa’u Bello, has approached a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking the dissolution of her marriage over alleged neglect and starvation by her husband, Usman Shuaibu.
Bello, who communicated through a sign language interpreter, Aisha Sulaiman, told the court that her husband provides only N50 daily for food, leaving her and their child in a state of hardship.
“We got married in 2016 and initially survived on food provided by my parents,” she explained. “But once that ran out, he stopped taking responsibility. He is a tailor, yet he doesn’t provide for us.”
She also recounted that after delivering her child, it was her husband’s mother who had to cover the hospital bills, as Shuaibu allegedly failed to do so.
Bello told the court that both families had previously intervened and urged her husband to support the household, but according to her, nothing changed. She therefore asked the court to dissolve the marriage.
In response, Shuaibu denied the allegations.
Presiding Judge, Malam Kabir Muhammad, adjourned the matter to August 25 and ordered both parties to return with their parents or guardians to assist in resolving the issue.
