Fresh details have emerged linking Chidiebere Ohama — the man recently arrested in Umuahia for stealing a ladder belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) — to a prior robbery incident at a local hotel.
Ohama was apprehended last week by a local vigilante group at Mission Hill, Umuahia, and handed over to the police for prosecution. However, new allegations suggest that his criminal activities may have started well before the ladder theft.
Mr. Ikenna Sochima, a hotel owner on New Road in Umuahia, claims that Ohama and his gang broke into his hotel in July 2025 using a ladder to scale the fence. According to Sochima, the group accessed a guest room and stole cash and valuables belonging to a guest.
“When the guest returned and discovered his belongings were missing, he raised an alarm,” Sochima said. “I reviewed the CCTV footage and recognized the faces of the suspects. I immediately contacted Operation Crush, who tracked them to the ‘Down Below’ area. When they showed a picture of Chidiebere, he was identified by others in the area.”
Sochima said Ohama was arrested following the incident, admitted to the robbery after being presented with the evidence, and was handed over to the police at the time.
The hotelier expressed shock that Ohama, now in custody for vandalism, had claimed the ladder theft was his first criminal offense.
