Nollywood actor Jamiu Dagunro, son of the late legendary filmmaker Fasasi Olabankewin (popularly known as Dagunro), has recounted a frightening encounter with a Nigerian monarch during a film shoot that nearly turned violent.
In a recent interview, Jamiu shared details of a tense confrontation that took place at a royal palace during the production of a movie. According to the actor, the film crew had obtained prior approval to shoot scenes at the monarch’s residence in both Osogbo and Lagos. However, complications arose after the king—who was not present during filming—reviewed the footage and took offense.
Jamiu revealed that the monarch was enraged by the size of the crew and the number of people who had entered the palace grounds. Matters escalated dramatically when the king accused veteran Nollywood actor Kola Oyewo of wearing his royal crown in one of the scenes—a move he deemed highly disrespectful and unauthorized.
"The king said Kola Oyewo wore his crown," Jamiu said. "He was so angry, he even threatened to order his guards to behead him."
In response to the monarch’s outrage, the king reportedly demanded that all footage featuring Kola Oyewo inside the palace be deleted. Fearing further conflict, Jamiu’s father complied, removing the scenes entirely and relocating the rest of the production to a different location.
The shocking incident underscores the cultural sensitivities filmmakers may encounter when working in traditional or sacred spaces, even with prior authorization.
