The Lagos State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against violent crime with the arrest of a notorious armed robbery kingpin, hired assassin, and convicted murderer, John Samuel. The 28-year-old suspect was apprehended on Thursday, September 19, 2025, at about 2:00 p.m., in a hideout located in Epe, Lagos State.
John Samuel, an ex-convict recently released from prison, is accused of masterminding the violent armed robbery attack on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, on August 18, 2025. During the incident, he allegedly shot and seriously wounded a businessman, Gbenga Obama, before making away with a valuable gold necklace and other items.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, Samuel had served a six-year sentence for armed robbery but returned to violent crime soon after his release. Investigators say he is known for targeting victims in broad daylight and often opens fire before robbing them.
CCTV footage from the August attack clearly captured Samuel using an English pistol to shoot the victim before snatching the jewelry, while an accomplice waited on a motorcycle to aid their escape. The injured victim has since been treated and discharged.
During interrogation, Samuel reportedly confessed to selling the stolen necklace for ₦4 million—well below its market value. Police say efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend other members of his criminal gang.
In a statement, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the swift and strategic action of the officers involved in the arrest. He assured the public that a discreet but thorough investigation is underway, and all perpetrators will be brought to justice.
"The Lagos State Police Command remains fully committed to the safety and protection of all residents," said Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babasẹyi B. Oluseyi. "We urge the public to continue their lawful activities without fear. Criminals should take heed—Lagos offers no hiding place for them."
The police have vowed to ensure full prosecution of the suspect and his accomplices upon the conclusion of investigations.
