Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, has alleged that he may be the next opposition political figure targeted for arrest following the reported detention of former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Amaechi made the remarks during an interview on Trust TV, where he discussed recent political developments and the growing activities of opposition figures within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to Amaechi, he has already received indications that authorities may soon move against him politically. However, he insisted that such threats would not discourage him or other opposition politicians from continuing their activities.
Speaking during the interview, Amaechi said, “They arrested Malami. They arrested El-Rufai. They have already said that I'm the next and that they are coming for me and we are here. So you ask yourself: if it were that easy to beat us, why are they doing this?”
The former Rivers governor further argued that the level of attention allegedly being directed toward the ADC by the ruling All Progressives Congress shows that the opposition coalition is being taken seriously ahead of future elections.
Amaechi maintained that neither he nor former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would commit their time, political influence, and resources to the ADC if they believed the party had no realistic chance of challenging the ruling party.
He also suggested that the ruling party would not be investing energy in confronting the ADC if it did not view the coalition as a genuine political threat.
The comments come amid increasing political discussions surrounding opposition alliances and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers have continued to monitor the activities of key opposition figures as realignments and coalition talks intensify across the country.
