According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Saturday 6th June 2026, tensions has escalated within the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ebonyi State as the party’s state secretary, Hon. Chinedu Adum, has raised concerns over deepening internal divisions and warned that members may defect en masse if unresolved issues persist.
Speaking in Abakaliki, Adum accused the state leadership of marginalising foundational members of the party while allegedly empowering recent entrants to take control of its structures; He said the situation has created widespread discontent among stakeholders who claim they played key roles in building the party in the state.
He disclosed that aggrieved members have already passed a vote of no confidence on the state chairman and are currently engaging in consultations across various wards and local government areas to decide their next steps politically.
According to him, complaints have been formally submitted to the party’s national leadership and other relevant bodies, urging swift intervention to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
Adum also alleged that external political influences, including former Governor Dr. Sam Egwu and his allies, were contributing to tensions within the party by attempting to dominate its internal structure.
He further lamented the collapse of the party’s primary election scheduled for May 30, 2026, describing it as a setback that has worsened mistrust among members and aspirants; He alleged that some aspirants paid funds ahead of the aborted exercise and called for accountability and possible refunds.
While noting that aggrieved members are still open to internal resolution, he warned that failure by the national leadership to act decisively could push them toward legal action or mass resignation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adum maintained that the crisis is not driven by personal ambition but by what he described as a need to preserve fairness, unity, and the integrity of the party structure.
