The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim Gotan, has announced the arrest of 24 suspected cultists and political thugs as part of intensified operations aimed at tackling cult-related violence and ensuring peace ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, Gotan said the command had stepped up efforts to combat cultism, political thuggery, and other violent crimes across the state following recent incidents of cult-related killings and disturbances, some of which have taken on political dimensions.
The police commissioner commended members of the media and other stakeholders for their continued support in the fight against crime, noting that collaboration has remained crucial in maintaining law and order.
"The essence of this briefing is to keep the public adequately informed of the Command's sustained efforts to combat cultism, political thuggery, and other violent crimes across the state," he said.
According to him, the command is fully aware of the security challenges posed by cult-related killings and acts of thuggery but has responded with intensified operations that have led to the arrest of 24 suspects allegedly linked to the crimes.
The suspects were identified as Kareem Saheed, also known as "Tanfiani"; Oyeladun Muideen, alias "Akilapa," 46; Ridwan Adekola, 39; Mukaila Azeez, alias "Mikki," 33; Sunday Friday, alias "Akube," 26; Olamilekan Fatai, 27; Tiamiyu Ismail, 26; Famuyiwa Adekunle Toib, 30; Ajiboye Toheed, 28; Morufu Sodiq, 24; Folorunsho Moshood, 31; Hassan Sodiq, 32; Badiru Saheed, 26; Adegoke Olalekan, 27; Faruk Olawale, 25; Iyanuoluwa Sarumi, 30; Afolabi Ahmed, 30; Adeshina Lukman, 39; Mutiu Opeyemi, 32; Olushola Daniel, 32; Abiola Olabode, 39; Azeez Abiodun, 32; Babatunde Kehinde, 23; and Dada Mayowa, 31.
Gotan reaffirmed the command's determination to rid the state of criminal elements and provide a secure environment before, during, and after the elections.
He warned cultists, political thugs, and other individuals intent on disrupting public peace to desist from criminal activities or face the full weight of the law.
The police commissioner also assured residents that the command would remain professional, neutral, and non-partisan in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities while upholding the rule of law without fear or favour.
He urged members of the public to continue supporting the police with credible information and cooperation to enhance security across Osun State.
