Hundreds of residents of Osun State on Friday took to the streets of Osogbo in a peaceful solidarity march to express support for the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, commending his professionalism, leadership, and efforts in maintaining peace and security across the state.
The rally, organised by the Egalitarian Network Nigeria (eNN), saw participants gather at Olaiya Junction before moving through key areas of the state capital, including MDS, Orisunbare Market, Old Garage, and Oke-Fia. Despite heavy rainfall, the demonstrators remained steadfast, carrying placards bearing messages such as “Gotan Must Stay,” “The People's Commissioner,” and “Support Professionalism, Swift Response and Zero Crime in Osun State.”
Speaking during the march, the Coordinator of eNN, Adejumo Michael, said the protest was aimed at countering what he described as unfounded campaigns on social media demanding the removal of the police commissioner.
According to him, CP Gotan has distinguished himself through prompt responses to security concerns and effective policing strategies that have contributed significantly to the prevailing peace in Osun State.
Adejumo dismissed allegations against the police chief as baseless and politically motivated, insisting that the commissioner deserved public support and recognition for his service.
“We observed calls on social media demanding that CP Gotan leave Osun State. As a human rights organisation committed to justice and fairness, we believe these attacks amount to blackmail. The allegations are false, and from our assessment, he is performing commendably,” he said.
He noted that the organisation has consistently spoken on issues of public interest and would continue to support individuals and institutions working for the welfare and security of citizens.
“We made our voices heard during the EndSARS movement, and today, we are speaking out again because we believe the Commissioner of Police is delivering on his responsibilities. That is why we are here,” he added.
The group also urged residents, political stakeholders, and community leaders to sustain peaceful coexistence and avoid actions capable of undermining security and stability, especially as political activities intensify in the state.
The demonstration concluded peacefully, with participants expressing confidence in CP Gotan’s leadership and the ability of the Osun State Police Command to continue maintaining law and order.
