Nigerian Army Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji has stated that former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva joined the alleged coup plot shortly before it was exposed, contributing around N400 million to fund the initiative.
As reported by Premium Times on Monday, August 10, 2026, Ma’aji made these assertions during a statement to military investigators, outlining how the purported movement was structured and financed over several years.
He said he personally financed much of the early phase by selling three residential properties in Kaduna State and a student hostel at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. According to Ma’aji, Sylva became involved later and provided his share in substantial, lump-sum payments. He emphasized that no foreign individuals or groups supported the effort.
Ma’aji identified Brigadier General Sadiq as the only high-ranking officer he believed was aware of the plan. However, he added that the general withdrew due to concerns about the financial demands and the necessity of involving more senior military figures.
He also refuted claims of having discussed the plot with Generals Jalo and Danja, stating he had never spoken to retired Navy Captain Victor about it either.
Another figure Ma’aji named was retired Colonel MM Adamu, whom he described as deeply involved. He alleged that Adamu intended to reach out to senior officers who might share concerns about the nation’s direction.
Sylva has previously rejected any involvement in the alleged conspiracy.
In Ma’aji’s words: “Timiprey Silva only came in recently. His own contribution was coming in bulk; mine, I don’t have records of how much I spent. I think Timiprey Sylva contributed about 400 million naira, and there are no foreign collaborations.”
