JMK’S POLITICAL RECORD SHOULD NOT BE ERASED - Hon. Prince Adeyeye Akinson Adeyemi

Describing Otunba Jumoke Ogunkeyede, popularly known as JMK, as a “self-styled leader” is inaccurate and reflects a poor understanding of Nigeria’s political history. His place in progressive politics did not begin yesterday; he is certainly not a newcomer who has only recently entered politics to attract attention.

JMK’s political and activist journey dates back to 1971, in the era of prominent activists such as Chief Anthony Enahoro. He has also been involved in mobilising and leading Nigerians in the diaspora, and his history is known to many leaders in today’s political establishment.

Many of today’s political players and commentators were not yet active in politics when JMK began his journey. They may disagree with his views, question his choice of words, or challenge his proposals. That is their right. But disagreement should not be used to dismiss a long record of political involvement.

JMK’s message was a call for the APC to address grievances, listen to its members and rebuild its grassroots structures. Whether one agrees with his criticism of the Agba Osun council or his views about the party’s leadership, the proper response is to address the substance of what he said, not to reduce his history to the label “self-styled.”

The title “Leader, Obokun Local Government” reflects the position by which JMK identifies himself. If anyone disputes the formal recognition or process behind that position, let the relevant party records and procedures speak clearly.

JMK has remained a progressive and has reaffirmed his commitment to the APC. His record deserves to be discussed fairly and respectfully.

*You may disagree with JMK, but you should not rewrite his history.*
