NIS Abeokuta Centre Kicks Off Operations, Opens Admission For Basic Certification Programmes

The National Institute for Sports (NIS) has commenced full operations at its Abeokuta Centre, located inside the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta, with a call on football coaches and sports enthusiasts in the South-West to take advantage of its Basic Certification Programmes.

This was disclosed during a courtesy visit by the Chairman, Nigeria Football Coaches Association (NFCA), Ogun State Chapter, Coach Victor Damilola Agbagu, to the South-West Zonal Coordinator of the Institute, Mrs. Mercy Omeza, on Wednesday, October 27, 2026.

Coach Agbagu said the visit was aimed at exploring opportunities for members of the association to enrol for the ongoing certification programmes in Football Coaching, Fitness Training and other related courses.

In her response, Mrs. Omeza said admission is still open and there are available slots for interested coaches who are willing to update their knowledge and improve their professional competence.

According to her, the establishment of the centre in Abeokuta has eliminated the challenge of distance, as coaches within the South-West zone no longer have to travel far for such professional training.

"There is no more excuse of 'it is not available in my locality'. NIS is now in Abeokuta. We therefore enjoin all stakeholders in the South-West to take advantage of this opportunity before it is too late," she said.

She disclosed that the minimum entry requirement for the Basic Certification Programme is five (5) credit passes, including Mathematics and English Language and any other three subjects in WAEC or NECO, at not more than two sittings.

She added that successful candidates are allowed to pay their fees in two instalments to ease financial burden.

Coach Agbagu, while appreciating the management of NIS, stressed the need for Nigerian coaches to embrace modern and scientific methodology of coaching, noting that the game has continued to evolve.

"The future of football coaching in Nigeria belongs to those who will aspire to get the required certifications and continually update their knowledge," he said.
