A new form of Point-of-Sale (POS) fraud has been uncovered in Lagos, as a suspected fraudster, James Daniel, was apprehended in the Parkview area of Ikorodu while attempting to swap a vendor’s POS terminal.
In a video obtained by Lagos Reporters, Daniel is seen being interrogated by local vigilantes after being caught in the act. He confessed to posing as a customer to distract POS operators, during which he would switch their machine with an identical-looking device of his own.
At the time of his arrest, multiple Moniepoint POS terminals were recovered from him. Several traders who had previously lost their devices were able to identify and reclaim them.
Security sources reveal this method has been quietly gaining ground in parts of Lagos, posing a growing risk to POS operators across the city.
Lagos Reporters will continue to follow the case and report on emerging fraud tactics, along with updates on efforts by security agencies to combat such schemes.
