Solomon Arase, a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and one of Nigeria’s most distinguished law enforcement officers, has reportedly passed away in Abuja.
According to Sahara Reporters, Arase died on Sunday at Cedarcrest Hospital in the Federal Capital Territory. However, an official confirmation from his family or the Nigeria Police Force is yet to be released.
Born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, Arase joined the Nigeria Police Force in December 1981 after earning a degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University. He later obtained a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos.
Throughout his career, Arase held several key positions, including Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Intelligence, and head of the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau. He also served in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia and was a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence Academy.
He was appointed Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police and retired on June 21, 2016, upon reaching the statutory retirement age.
In January 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Chairman of the Police Service Commission. However, he was relieved of the position by President Bola Tinubu in June 2024.
Arase’s passing marks the end of a notable chapter in Nigeria’s policing history.
