A man identified as Sagiru Ayuba has reportedly died while in the custody of a local vigilante group in Bauchi State, sparking outrage and demands for justice from his family.
According to information obtained by SaharaReporters, Ayuba was arrested on August 16, 2025, by vigilante operatives in Tilde Fulani, Toro Local Government Area, over an alleged debt of ₦900,000.
Family sources said Ayuba was able to raise ₦650,000 towards the debt shortly after his arrest and pleaded for more time to settle the remaining ₦250,000. However, the vigilante group allegedly refused to release him and continued to detain him.
Tragically, Ayuba was reported dead within 24 hours of his detention. According to the family, he was shot and killed by a member of the vigilante group while still in their custody.
“This is a clear case of extrajudicial killing,” a family member told SaharaReporters. “This was a civil matter that should have been handled by a court, not by vigilantes who lack legal authority to detain or punish individuals.”
The family also named two individuals, Kabiru and Idris, as leaders of the vigilante group allegedly involved in the incident.
They are calling on relevant authorities to launch a thorough investigation, hold those responsible accountable, and ensure justice is served.
“The killing of Sagiru is a gross violation of his fundamental human rights, particularly his right to life as enshrined in Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended),” the relative added.
Efforts by SaharaReporters to reach the spokesperson of the Bauchi State Police Command, Ahmed Wakil, were unsuccessful. Calls went unanswered and a text message sent to his phone remained unacknowledged at the time of filing this report.
