In a recent interview on TVC News, a former Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo, Umar Sani, has predicted a major defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In his statement , Sani stated that the APC would lose a significant portion of its membership once the reasons behind some politicians’ defection to the party are no longer being fulfilled; He explained that many of the defectors joined the ruling party for personal protection, access to contracts, and political appointments, rather than genuine ideological alignment.
According to him, political loyalty in Nigeria has become largely transactional, with many politicians shifting allegiance based on self-interest rather than principle or conviction.
“Most of those who defected to the APC did so for self-serving reasons, protection, contracts, and positions; Once those expectations are not met, they will return to where they came from; The APC will lose most of its members before 2027,” Sani asserted.
He warned that the ruling party’s internal structure may face serious challenges as political ambitions clash ahead of the next election cycle; Sani added that dissatisfaction among members who feel sidelined or unfulfilled would trigger a wave of defections, especially as the opposition PDP begins to reposition itself.
