According to a report by Daily Trust on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has refuted claims made by Governor Caleb Mutfwang that political stakeholders have been pressuring him to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.
The governor had recently stated during an event at the Government House in Jos that several members of the APC were urging him to join their party.
He, however, maintained that only divine direction and the will of the people who voted for him could determine his political alignment.
Governor Mutfwang’s comments came amid ongoing political discussions in the state over possible realignments ahead of future elections.
In the past year, some APC groups, including the North Central APC Forum led by Saleh Zazzaga, have expressed interest in having the governor cross over to their camp.
Despite these appeals, recent developments within the party suggest that not all members share the same sentiment.
A section of APC stakeholders in Plateau reportedly voted against welcoming the governor into their ranks, arguing that his membership was not in the party’s interest.
Reacting to Mutfwang’s remarks, the APC acting publicity secretary in Plateau State, Shittu Bamaiyi, dismissed the governor’s claims as unfounded.

He stated that there was no official move or coordinated effort from the APC leadership to persuade Mutfwang to defect.
Bamaiyi also noted that if the governor’s administration had met the expectations of Plateau citizens, such discussions about party defection would not arise.
He added that Mutfwang’s comments reflected political insecurity rather than genuine pressure from opposition members.
The APC spokesperson further pointed out that it was unusual for a sitting governor to claim that members of an opposition party were eager for his defection when the party itself had not extended any formal invitation.
He emphasized that the APC remains focused on strengthening its internal structure and preparing for upcoming elections, rather than courting politicians from other parties.
He said, “Whatever the case, it is a big minus for a sitting governor when the opposition openly objects to his joining its ranks, even when that party’s goal is to win future elections."
The disagreement between Governor Mutfwang and the APC highlights the tense political atmosphere in Plateau State as both the ruling and opposition parties position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
While Mutfwang continues to express loyalty to the PDP, the APC leadership insists that there is no plan or desire within the party to absorb him, signaling a clear political divide between both camps in the state.
