Players in Tears as Coach Dies During Match

Tragedy struck Serbian football on Monday as FK Radnicki 1923 coach Mladen Zizovic tragically passed away during a Serbian SuperLiga match against Mladost Lucani. The heartbreaking incident unfolded midway through the game, leaving players, officials, and fans in deep shock.

The 44-year-old Bosnian manager collapsed unexpectedly on the touchline and received immediate medical attention from paramedics at the stadium. Despite prompt treatment and efforts to revive him, Zizovic was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Upon hearing the devastating news, the referee stopped play and abandoned the match shortly before half-time.
Footage from the scene captured emotional scenes as players from both sides fell to the ground in tears, unable to contain their grief. The tragic moment silenced the stadium, as supporters stood in disbelief, paying silent tribute to the late coach.
Zizovic, a former Bosnia and Herzegovina international, had only been appointed as head coach of FK Radnicki 1923 on 23 October 2025, less than a month before his untimely death. Known for his passion, discipline, and deep understanding of the game, he quickly earned the respect of his players and colleagues.

In a heartfelt club statement, FK Radnicki 1923 expressed their sorrow:
“Our club has lost not only a great professional but above all a good man, a friend, and a sportsman who, with his knowledge, energy, and nobility, has left a deep mark on the hearts of all who knew him.”
The Bosnia and Herzegovina Football Association also mourned his passing, describing it as “a great loss for Bosnian-Herzegovinian football.” The federation highlighted his remarkable playing career, which included stints with HSK Zrinjski Mostar, FK Radnik Bijeljina, and FK Borac Banja Luka, as well as appearances for the national team.
Following his retirement from professional football, Zizovic transitioned into coaching, managing several clubs across Bosnia and the wider Balkan region. His sudden death has prompted tributes from across European football, with leading Serbian clubs — including Red Star Belgrade — sending condolences to his family and team.

The Football Association of Serbia (FSS) also paid tribute, stating:

“Your love for football and the mark you left will remain with us forever.”
Mladen Zizovic’s passing leaves a profound void in the football community. He will be remembered not only as a skilled coach and player but also as a man who lived passionately for the game.
