Nine weeks after the death of prominent businessman and 2023 Ondo State SDP governorship candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye (OBA), his first son, Samuel Akingboye, has publicly alleged that the circumstances surrounding the incident point to foul play and a possible attempt to derail investigations.
In a detailed statement issued on Sunday, Samuel said he was compelled to address the public due to “disturbing revelations” following his father’s sudden death on September 3, 2025.
Disputed Circumstances of Death
According to Samuel, he learned of his father's death through a distress call early that morning, allegedly conveyed to his security aide by his stepbrother, Melvin. He claimed that the physical condition of the body contradicted the explanation initially given by members of the household.
He added that attempts to obtain a coherent account from his stepmother and stepbrothers were met with “inconsistent and incoherent responses.”
Police Investigation and Autopsy Controversies
Samuel said he requested an autopsy due to the conflicting narratives. A police investigation was opened, with officers from Ajah Division and later the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, involved.
He alleged that police officers initially met resistance from his stepmother and her children when attempting to access the VGC residence where the incident occurred. A subsequent visit with reinforcements enabled officers to take statements and collect evidence.
The SCID’s Homicide Unit later retrieved CCTV footage from a neighboring house and collected forensic samples. Samuel stated that initial footage “contradicted earlier claims” made by individuals present on the night of the incident.
He further accused his stepmother and her children of displaying hostility at SCID during questioning, leading to their brief detention.
Despite the completion of an autopsy, Samuel alleged that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police delayed releasing the results and engaged the opposing side days before inviting him. He described the process as “opaque and troubling.”
He also criticized the Commissioner’s decision to transfer the case from the SCID to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Surulere for a fresh investigation, calling the move “illogical” and potentially aimed at frustrating the process.
Concerns Over Alleged Asset Tampering
The deceased’s son also alleged that large sums of money were moved from his father’s company account to accounts linked to his stepmother and her son within hours of his death.
He claimed that valuables, cash, documents, and personal items were removed from his father’s VGC residence and office while he was still trying to deposit the body at the morgue.
According to him, attempts are now underway by individuals of interest to access or transfer his father’s assets, even before the investigation is concluded.
He also reported receiving death threats, prompting him to issue a public warning:
“Anyone who tries to loot, transact, including buying or selling any of the properties… does so at his or her peril.”
Appeal for Intervention
Samuel called on the Inspector General of Police to take direct oversight of the case and urged the Lagos Commissioner of Police to release the autopsy report, CCTV evidence, and comply with a pending request from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
He also appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, civil society groups, legal bodies, and the public for protection and support.
‘My Father Deserves Justice’
Describing his father as “a patriot, a provider, and a voice for many,” Samuel vowed to pursue justice regardless of how long the process takes.
“I speak today not in malice, but in grief, responsibility, and the pursuit of justice,” he said.
Authorities have not yet issued a public statement responding to the allegations.
