The Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere/Yoruba Leaders of Thought Osun State Chapter has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, describing his death as a monumental loss to Osun State in particular, the academic community and Nigeria in general.
In a statement released to the press and jointly signed by the leaders of the group — former Deputy Governor of Osun State, His Excellency Sooko Adeleke Adewoyin, and the Assistant National Secretary / State Coordinator,Arc. Prince Lekan Usman and made available through the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Adebayo Temitope, Afenifere noted that Prof. Oyeweso’s death has left a void that will be extremely difficult to fill.
The statement highlighted Prof. Oyeweso’s exceptional contributions to academia and public service. His sterling roles at the Lagos State University and the Osun State University established him as one of the most respected scholars of his generation. As Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, he brought uncommon insight leadership, and dedication to institutional development — qualities that earned him admiration across Nigeria’s academic landscape.
Afenifere described him as a historian of uncommon virtue, a consummate administrator, and a distinguished son of Osun whose intellectual brilliance and passion for societal progress stood out throughout his lifetime.
His contributions to research, mentorship, nation-building, and the promotion of Yoruba history and culture were outstanding.
Prof Siyan served the Yoruba Leaders of Thought as an eminent resource person and was ipso facto,the chairman of the education committee until his demise.
The group extended heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and associates, praying that God grant them the strength to bear this painful and irreparable loss. It added that Prof. Oyeweso’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of scholars and leaders.
