According to Daily post, Officers of the Oyo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, have arrested a group of suspected bandits in Lagelu Local Government Area following a coordinated operation at the Iwo Road axis of Ibadan. The incident, which reportedly occurred two days ago, was triggered by alerts from vigilant residents who observed unusual movements in the area and quickly informed security authorities.
According to local sources, the suspects were intercepted while allegedly in possession of weapons. Although early reports claimed they were of Fulani origin, Amotekun officials have emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that no conclusions will be drawn until profiling and interrogation are complete. The security outfit stated that the arrests were based strictly on suspicious activity and not on ethnic identity, urging the public to avoid speculation.
The operation took place after residents in the Iwo Road Lagelu corridor raised concerns about a group of individuals moving in what they described as a “coordinated and suspicious manner.” Acting on the tip off, Amotekun patrol units swiftly mobilised to the scene, successfully apprehending the suspects without resistance. Weapons recovered at the scene were immediately secured as evidence.
A senior Amotekun officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to address the media, said the arrests underscore the importance of community cooperation in crime prevention. He noted that timely information from residents has helped the security outfit respond more effectively to threats across Oyo State.
He added that the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation, and the outcome of the investigation will determine whether they are transferred to the police for further action. Authorities have assured that due process will be followed and that the rights of all individuals in custody will be respected.
Local community leaders have also commended both the residents who raised the alarm and the Amotekun operatives for their quick response. They stressed that the incident serves as a reminder for communities to remain alert, especially with rising security concerns in parts of the country.
The Oyo State Government is expected to release an official statement once preliminary investigations are concluded. Meanwhile, Amotekun Corps Commander, through internal communication, urged the public to continue providing credible information, stating that collaboration between security agencies and residents remains crucial to maintaining safety and preventing criminal activities.
