Japanese-born American actor Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, best known for playing Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat (1995), has died at the age of 75.
Tagawa’s passing was announced by his publicist, Penny Vizcarra, who revealed that the movie star died due to complications from a stroke in Santa Barbara, California, on Thursday, December 4.
Aside from his movie portrayal of the antagonist Shang Tsung, Tagawa also lent his talent to the TV and video game iterations of the character, and will be remembered by fans of the franchise.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, on September 27, 1950, Tagawa’s breakthrough came when he secured the role of the Eunuch in The Last Emperor (1987).
He also played an undercover agent in the 1989 James Bond film Licence to Kill. Some of his other film credits include Big Trouble in Little China (1986), Twins (1988), Rising Sun (1993), Vampires (1998), Elektra (2005), Tekken (2009), Little Boy (2015), and Sky Sharks (2020).
Tagawa was reportedly surrounded by his children at the time of his passing.
