According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria on Thursday, March 5, 2026, uncertainty has emerged around Iran national football team’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup as rising tensions in the Middle East raise concerns about whether the country will be able to attend the tournament.
Iran secured qualification after finishing top of its group in the Asian qualifiers organized by the Asian Football Confederation. However, the recent conflict involving Iran, United States and Israel has created uncertainty over the team’s ability to travel and compete in the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.
Under the regulations of FIFA, if a nation that has already qualified for the World Cup withdraws before the tournament begins, the governing body can select another national team to take its place. The rules do not strictly require the replacement to come from the same football confederation, meaning FIFA has flexibility when making such a decision.
Reports suggest that the president of the Iranian football federation has acknowledged that the ongoing military situation could make participation in the competition difficult. Iran had been drawn in Group G alongside Belgium national football team, Egypt national football team and New Zealand national football team.
Among the countries being discussed as potential replacements, Iraq national football team has emerged as the leading candidate. Iraq narrowly missed automatic qualification and is currently involved in the intercontinental play-offs, where it is scheduled to face either Bolivia national football team or Suriname national football team for a chance to secure a place at the World Cup.
Iraq’s position as a possible replacement is largely due to its ranking among Asian teams that fell short of qualification. If Iran eventually withdraws and Iraq successfully wins its play-off match, FIFA could consider awarding the available spot to the Iraqi side.
However, preparations for the play-off have reportedly been complicated by travel challenges connected to the regional conflict. Restrictions affecting air travel and embassy operations have made visa arrangements difficult for players and officials as they prepare for the decisive match scheduled in Mexico City.
If Iraq is unable to qualify or cannot take Iran’s place for any reason, another team being discussed is the United Arab Emirates national football team. The UAE finished among the highest-ranked Asian sides that did not automatically reach the tournament and could be considered as an alternative option.
For now, FIFA has not confirmed any changes to the tournament lineup and continues to monitor the situation closely. Officials are expected to decide on Iran’s status in the coming weeks as preparations continue for the expanded 2026 World Cup.
