Captain Wilfred Ndidi has insisted that the Nigeria national football team remains concentrated on its preparations even as uncertainty surrounds their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a report from BSN Sports.
Nigeria’s prospects suffered a significant blow last November after the Super Eagles lost 4–3 on penalties to the DR Congo national football team in the African playoff final. The matter became more complicated when the Nigeria Football Federation filed an official complaint with FIFA, raising concerns about the eligibility of certain Congolese players and alleging irregular nationality changes.
The case has been under review since December 2025, and with just 20 days remaining before the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico, a decision has yet to be announced. Ndidi explained that the players are focusing solely on football and ensuring they remain ready for any outcome.
He added that the squad trusts the relevant authorities to resolve the issue properly. While the players hope the situation will be clarified soon, Ndidi emphasized that their priority is to stay united, continue working hard, and meet the expectations of Nigerian supporters. He stressed that the team will keep representing the country proudly regardless of the final verdict.
The intercontinental playoff tournament is scheduled to be held between March 26 and March 31 in Guadalajara and Monterrey, where six teams will compete for the final two spots at the World Cup. Currently, DR Congo national football team are set to face the winner of the playoff between Jamaica national football team and New Caledonia national football team, although the scenario could change if Nigeria’s protest is successful.
In addition, the Nigeria Football Federation has arranged a four-team tournament for the Super Eagles during the March international break. Nigeria are scheduled to face Iran national football team on March 27 and Jordan national football team on March 31 in Amman, though rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East could potentially affect the staging of the matches.
