A prominent Nigerian cleric, Chris Oyakhilome, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a leader uniquely positioned to transform Nigeria, urging citizens to rally behind him despite past political differences.
Speaking in a recent address, Oyakhilome framed Tinubu’s political journey in spiritual terms, saying the president’s emergence and resilience reflect a deeper significance beyond partisan politics.
“It’s not just interesting; it is deeply spiritual,” the pastor said, adding that while some may struggle to interpret unfolding events, others are able to “read the signs of the times.”
Oyakhilome emphasized that God does not seek perfect individuals but those who are available and capable of growth. Drawing biblical parallels, he referenced figures such as Moses and the Apostle Paul to illustrate how unlikely individuals can become instruments of change.
Turning to Nigeria’s political landscape, he recalled remarks attributed to the late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo, who he said had suggested decades ago that meaningful reform would require an insider familiar with the system.
The cleric disclosed that he had previously supported former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo during the presidential primaries of the ruling All Progressives Congress and had publicly advocated for new leadership at the time. However, he noted that Tinubu faced significant opposition and political obstacles but ultimately prevailed.
“I have not come across a man more vilified, but he overcame every formidable obstacle,” Oyakhilome said, referring to Tinubu’s political battles in the years leading up to his presidency.
He described the president as an experienced political insider who understands the inner workings of the system and the challenges ahead. According to him, Tinubu’s survival through years of political struggles demonstrates resilience and strategic acumen.
While expressing hope that the president will prioritize the welfare of ordinary Nigerians, Oyakhilome said Tinubu has the opportunity to “carve his name in the books of history” by leading reforms that benefit the broader population.
“He can’t do it alone but can lead the way. Let’s rally round him,” the pastor concluded.
