The Chairman of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Oyo State, Kayode Babayomi, has accused Governor Seyi Makinde of allegedly using state resources to advance his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.
Babayomi, in a statement on Tuesday, alleged that Makinde had engaged in what he described as “frivolous spending” of public funds on political activities and structures allegedly connected to his presidential ambition.
He called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the governor’s administration’s spending and hold anyone found culpable accountable.
According to him, the alleged diversion of public resources had occurred amid increased allocations accruing to state governments from the Nigerian government.
He alleged that Makinde’s political activities had included the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention, the APM convention, the governor’s alleged presidential declaration events and the establishment of a new campaign headquarters in Abuja.
“As states earn more billions of naira from the federal government coffers, governors like Makinde have chosen to increase their extravagant lifestyles and illegal diversion of government funds directly to their own political ambitions,” Babayomi said.
He further alleged that Oyo State had remained stagnant while the governor allegedly prioritised his political activities over the welfare of residents.
“The state has been in stagnation ever since. He has prioritised his chicken political ambitions over the state, using state funds for his own political benefit while people live in fear, students attend classes in panic mode, and there is no significant relief to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal on transportation,” he said.
Babayomi also claimed that Makinde was aware that the people of the state would reject his preferred candidate, whom he referred to as “his puppet, Adekanmbi,” in the 2027 elections.
He noted that this was responsible for what he described as reckless spending of public resources before the end of Makinde’s tenure.
“Makinde knows that the people of Oyo State will definitely reject his puppet, Adekanmbi. He is doing everything possible to spend what belongs to the people of Oyo State recklessly,” the AAC chairman alleged.
Babayomi urged anti-corruption agencies to scrutinise the state government’s expenditure, particularly spending allegedly connected to political activities.
“We call on the EFCC and the ICPC to take a critical look into the spending of state funds and hold everyone involved accountable,” he said.
“State funds belong to all the people of Oyo State, not to Makinde or his political career.”
The AAC chairman further said his party would oppose any attempt to use Oyo State’s resources to finance political activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said residents would reject the governor’s alleged political plans both through protests and at the ballot box.
“The people of Oyo State will reject Makinde in 2027 and elect the only pro-people party, our party, AAC,” Babayomi said.
“We will not allow him to launder or spend the state’s resources before he packs out of Agodi. Reckless spending of the state’s resources will be resisted by the people, both on the streets and at the ballot box.”
Babayomi said the AAC would seek to end what he described as financial instability and reckless spending in the state if elected.
“AAC is coming to end financial instability and reckless spending in Oyo State, and we shall ensure that people like Makinde, who choose to spend the state’s resources recklessly, are held accountable and brought to justice,” he added.
