The lingering political crisis in Rivers State has taken a fresh dramatic turn as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, publicly accused Governor Siminalayi Fubara of reneging on a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu.
According to Wike, the governor had explicitly agreed during a high-level meeting with the President to shelve any ambition for a second term in office in exchange for the withdrawal of impeachment proceedings against him by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“I’m ready for peace. I’m no longer interested in contesting for governor. I will not do it,” Wike quoted Fubara as declaring before President Tinubu. The minister claimed the governor has since gone back on his word, describing the action as “playing smart” after the impeachment threat was suspended.
Wike made the remarks while addressing supporters in parts of Rivers State, warning that details of the agreement reached in the presence of the President would soon be made public to Rivers people. He insisted there would be “no going back” on the decisions taken to resolve the protracted feud.
The latest escalation follows multiple interventions by President Tinubu aimed at stabilising the oil-rich state. In one such mediation, Tinubu reportedly directed Wike and his allies to halt impeachment moves against Fubara, with the understanding that both parties would honour specific commitments, including clarity on political leadership and future ambitions.
As tensions simmer, stakeholders continue to call for restraint to prevent disruption to governance and economic activities in the state. Neither Governor Fubara nor the Presidency has issued an immediate response to Wike’s latest statement as of press time.
