...Committee Charged to Deliver Memorable Celebration and Drive Sustainable Development for Osogbo
The Osogbo Elders Council on Monday, June 15, 2026, formally inaugurated the Oroki Day 2026 Planning Committee, charging members to work diligently towards organizing a memorable celebration that will promote unity, progress, and sustainable development in Osogboland.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Chairman of the Osogbo Elders Council, Professor Adeleke, emphasized the importance of collective commitment to the advancement of Osogbo. He noted that his dedication to the growth and development of the ancient town predates the establishment of the Osogbo Progressive Union (OPU), assuring that he remains steadfast in his support for the community.
Professor Adeleke explained that members of the planning committee were carefully selected based on their proven track records, commitment, integrity, and contributions to the development of Osogbo over the years. He urged the committee to work harmoniously and effectively to ensure the success of Oroki Day 2026.
According to him, the forthcoming celebration should go beyond festivities and serve as a platform for advancing key developmental goals for the town. He particularly challenged the committee to initiate discussions and strategies that would lead to the establishment of a higher institution in Osogbo, such as a university or polytechnic, comparable to what exists in other notable towns across the country.
“We must begin to think beyond celebrations. Osogbo deserves a higher institution that can create opportunities for our youths and contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of our town. Whatever proceeds are realized from Oroki Day should be directed towards projects that can make this dream a reality,” he stated.
Professor Adeleke further stressed that any funds generated from the event should be channeled towards establishing educational institutions capable of providing employment opportunities and empowering indigenous youths of Osogbo. He added that Oroki Day 2026 presents a unique opportunity to revive the cultural heritage and developmental aspirations of Osogboland after many years without a major Oroki Day celebration.
In his remarks, the Asiwaju of Osogboland, Retired Justice Moshood Adekunle Adeigbe, commended the committee members for their dedication and willingness to serve. He expressed confidence in their ability to deliver a successful event, noting that several members had previously played significant roles in organizing the successful 15th Coronation Anniversary of the Ataoja of Osogboland, His Royal Majesty Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun Larooye II.
Justice Adeigbe described the composition of the committee as a gathering of experienced and capable individuals whose collective expertise would greatly benefit the planning and execution of Oroki Day 2026.
“I am particularly pleased with the calibre of individuals selected for this assignment. Many of them demonstrated exceptional commitment during the 15th anniversary celebration of the Ataoja of Osogboland. I have no doubt that they will bring the same level of dedication and excellence to Oroki Day 2026,” he said.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Osogbo Action Council, Dr. Agboola, expressed optimism that the committee would successfully accomplish its mandate. He recalled the remarkable success recorded during the recent 15th Coronation Anniversary celebration of the Ataoja of Osogboland and noted that the experience gained from that event would be invaluable in organizing Oroki Day 2026.
Dr. Agboola advised the committee members to maintain close consultation with the Osogbo Elders Council and other respected stakeholders across the town throughout the planning process. According to him, continuous engagement with community leaders would ensure broad participation, inclusiveness, and the overall success of the programme.
He further explained that the committee was deliberately constituted with individuals who have demonstrated competence and commitment to community service, urging them to justify the confidence reposed in them.
While noting that the official date for Oroki Day 2026 is yet to be announced, he expressed confidence that the event would become a landmark celebration capable of projecting the cultural heritage, unity, and developmental aspirations of Osogboland.
Responding on behalf of the committee, the Chairman, Alhaji Kayode Aliu Afolabi, expressed appreciation to the Osogbo Elders Council for the confidence placed in the team. He assured the elders and the entire people of Osogbo that the committee would work tirelessly to deliver a successful and memorable Oroki Day celebration.
Alhaji Afolabi pledged the commitment of all members to the assignment, promising that the committee would not disappoint the expectations of the elders and the people of Osogboland.
“We are deeply honoured by this responsibility and we assure the Elders Council and the entire Osogbo community that we will discharge our duties with dedication, transparency, and commitment. We are determined to make Oroki Day 2026 a huge success,” he stated.
